The National Library of Korea held the "2024 Old Book Donor Plaque Unveiling Ceremony" on April 22nd (Monday) at 2:00 PM, with over 100 attendees, including donors of old books from 2023 and their families and friends. Among the attendees were 16 donors, including Gary Edward Mintier, Mary Ann Mintier, Korean-American Baek Un-cheol, and Cho Hye-young.
The Mintier couple, as members of the U.S. Peace Corps, served as English instructors at Dong-A University in Busan from 1969 to 1975. During their time in Korea, they collected old Korean books. In June 2021, they expressed their intention to donate the entire collection of old books to the NLK. After three years of effort, their wish was fulfilled, and 120 volumes of old books were returned to Korea. Baek Un-cheol, who resides in the U.S., had cherished hundreds of old books belonging to his wife’s grandfather. Despite being 90 years old, he decided to donate the entire collection to his homeland before it was too late and traveled to Korea to make the donation.
