몇 년 전 ‘정재승의 과학콘서트’가
베스트셀러로 등극한 이후 출판계에서는 제목의
후광 효과를 노린 책들을 쏟아내고 있다. ‘철학콘서트’,
‘논리학콘서트’, ‘심리학콘서트’, ‘수학콘서트’,
‘경제학콘서트’, ‘경영학콘서트’, ‘재미학콘서트’,
‘우주콘서트’ 등이 그것인데, 비록 서명은
흉내내었을지언정 딱딱한 학문을 대중들이
흥미롭게 접할 수 있도록 하기 위한 기획의도거니와
일부는 내용의 수준도 높다는 점에서 무조건
아류작으로 평가 절하하기는 곤란할 터이다.
어쨌든 이 책들을 바라보면서 자연스럽게 ‘문헌정보학콘서트’도
나올까 하는 생각이 문득 떠올랐다.
이번 호에서는 ‘도서관 콘서트’를
주제로 삼았다. 도서관 콘서트라 하면 조용한
도서관과 시끄러운 콘서트의 상반된 분위기를
떠올리며 다소 의아하게 생각할 수 있겠지만,
기실은 이미 현실에서 진행되고 있는 일이다.
우리나라만 하더라도 국립중앙도서관의 ‘도서관
음악회’, 경희대 도서관의 ‘작은 음악회’,
충남대 도서관의 ‘정오의 도서관 음악회’
등이 몇 년째 꾸준히 열리고 있다. 외국의
경우 더 소란스러운(?) 록 콘서트도 이루어질
정도인데, 이러한 공연은 하이 스트렁(The
High Strung)1), 해리와 포터(Harry and the
Potters)2), 미스터 허드슨 & 라이브러리(Mr
Hudson & The Library)3) 등 뮤지션들의
도서관 투어로 이뤄지는 형태와, 윌리엄스버그
도서관의 DDC(Dewey Decibel Concert)4)처럼
도서관이 기획하는 형태로 구분할 수 있다.
그러나 지금부터 이야기하려는
건 앞에서 언급한 ‘진짜’ 콘서트가 아니고,
단어를 잠시 차용했을 뿐이다. 본문에서 다룰
내용은 다름 아니라 도서관을 소재로 한 음악에
관한 것이다. 즉, 도서관이나 사서를 배경으로,
소재로, 주제로 삼은 음악을 조사한 후 그
음악이 도서관이나 사서를 어떻게 묘사하고
있는지를 함께 살펴보려고 한다. 결론부터
말하자면, 어린이 교육을 목적으로 만든 곡
일부를 제외하고는 대부분의 대중음악에서는
역시나 ‘사랑’을 주제로 도서관 및 사서를
배경, 또는 인물로 다루고 있음을 목도할 수
있다.
< Library Rock >
1987년부터 3년간 영국에서
발매된 ‘Desperate Rock N Roll’ 시리즈는
1950년대 록앤롤 곡들을 수록하여 애호가들의
사랑을 받은 컴필레이션 음반이다. 총 12장의
시리즈 중 Vol. 4의 열네 번째 곡으로 메이니
& 호위(Maynie & Howie)의 “Library
Rock”이 실려 있다. 메이니 앤 호위의 활동
기록은 지금 거의 남아있지 않은 상태이지만,
이 곡만큼은 초창기 록앤롤 음악의 감흥을
물씬 느낄 수 있다.

1990년대를 풍미했던 펑크록
밴드 그린데이(Green Day)가 1990년에 내놓은
데뷔 앨범 ‘39/Smooth’의 첫 번째 트랙으로
“At The Library”가 수록되어 있다. 도서관에서
어느 여자를 보고 사랑에 빠졌지만 이미 그
여자에게는 남자친구가 있더라는 내용의 곡이다.

뮤지컬 ‘뮤직맨(The Music
Man)’은 1957년 12월 브로드웨이 마제스틱
극장에서 초연한 이래 1980년, 1988년, 2000년에
각각 리바이벌되어 지금까지도 공연되고 있을
정도로 미국인들의 사랑을 받고 있는 작품이다.
1962년에는 로버트 프레스톤(Robert Preston),
셜리 존스(Shirley Jones) 주연의 영화로 만들어져
개봉되기도 했다.
마리안이라는 이름은 이 작품의
대본, 작곡, 작사를 맡았던 메레디스 윌슨(Meredith
Willson)이 2차 세계대전 시기에 알고 지내게
된 의학사서 마리안 씨리(Marian Seeley)에게서
따왔으며, 사서라는 직업 설정도 마찬가지이다.5)
마리안을 위한 사랑의 노래 “Marian the Librarian”은
1막 7장에서 힐의 목소리로 불려진다.
